There seems to be this consensus amongst Feminists and Mens theorist that argues that over the last century gender roles have relaxed. Each decade seems to justify new avenues of individuality for men and women to express themselves.
Often these avenues have been lobbied for, and after much exhaustion become protected by law. Social change takes place to make space for these people, rightly.
But is it true that Gender Roles have relaxed? Become more permissive? Can such statements truly be applied to the world as a whole? Where have roles become more restrictive?
How have these Gender Roles relaxed? Are all the gains in terms of law, career and personal choices. Does individuality actually lead to true diversity amongst sex? If 10% change their behaviour, what does that mean for the 90%
Have other parts of gender roles become more repressive, consider things such as debt, responsibly, ethnicity, sexuality, and disability.
Has one gender gained at the expense of another?
This Self reflection task is best done in a group where your views can be challenged. It would be most beneficial to do with someone who is in another age group. Whilst writing your answer may aid your self development and Sociological Imagination, the answer itself may be too expansive. So if you choose this route pick one area.
When one grows up as a girl, the world tells her the things that she is supposed to be: emotional, loving, beautiful, wanted. And then when she is those things, the world tells you they are inferior: illogical, weak, vain, empty.
