Love Yourself! Posting another picture won’t bring gratification.

Like Justin Bieber said, “you should go and love yourself”. Let me examine a common situation, you feel depressed and like no one cares about you, so you upload a photo to (insert the name of your favourite social media site) and get the attention you were craving translated into a couple likes. If you only get a few likes you might feel quite crappy, but if you get loads of likes maybe you’ll experience a temporary boost. Hopefully, you’ll feel better. But you don’t really care about those people who liked your photo. This process is very common in society and stems for the fact that; we don’t love ourselves like we should. Let me explain, when I say that you have to love yourself I don’t mean you have to hug yourself, kiss your body or say in front of the mirror how pretty you are. Loving yourself means that you stop day dreaming and start moving towards your dream. That you don’t set any vague goals which don’t further your progress. Loving yourself means not judging yourself for something you have no control over. Loving yourself means that you don’t wait until somebody selects you.

Loving yourself means that you believe in your abilities when the rest don’t. Loving yourself means that you work on something that stimulates you; and not your family, friends or your boss. Loving yourself means that you embrace failure and realise you can’t avoid it. That is the definition I have of self-love and not the posts we see on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. Trust me. When you are sitting on a plane and the flight is about to depart the air hostess explains how in the case of an emergency the first thing you must do is to put the oxygen mask on yourself, before helping others! They say this because you aren’t able to help anybody until you help yourself so apply this principle to more areas of your life.

You have to think of yourself like you are the menu of a very special/exclusive restaurant. Your dishes need to be a representation of all the features that form part of you, which makes you different from other restaurants. Because you don’t want to serve the same menu as the others, do you? You don’t want to become an average-low-class restaurant. That is why you must not depress or change your menu every time a customer comes complaining about it. Or to keep up with the new in food. Maybe they just don’t like spicy food, for example. But if you believe that it is so tasty and you worked hard at it, then there is no point on regretting or changing the menu. This is just an analogy but realistically it can be applied to any social fad.

So the next times you are going to make a decision first think of these three questions: Is this decision really important for me/my life? Am I just follow a trend? Does it stimulate me/is it going to progress my goals? From now on, if you start to ask yourself these questions in everyday situations, it will be a good diverter towards health behaviour. Then you will know you are behaving like someone who really loves yourself. Social pressure is so easy to succumb to but the sheep are always left behind.  Remember: love yourself like if it would depend on you because it really god damn does.
